Story Starters

Here are ten story hooks to inspire a short story set in the world of Cyber Spell.

  1. The Code and the Cure: A young Codeweaver in Haven has a sibling suffering from a mysterious digital plague that conventional medicine can’t fix. They hear a rumor that a specific strain of pre-Cascade medical nanites, capable of rewriting corrupted code in a person’s cybernetics, can be found in a ruined hospital on the outskirts of the city. The hospital, however, is now the hunting ground for a “Mimic” daemon known to disguise itself as medical equipment.

  2. The Samurai’s Escort: A Wayfaring Samurai takes a high-paying job from the Aegis Corporation: escort a seemingly simple data-courier through the territory of the Scrap Barons. The Barons, however, seem unusually determined to capture this courier. The Samurai must fend off war-rigs and raiders, all while trying to figure out if the data they’re protecting is worth the lives it’s costing, and why the “Church of the Omnissiah” has taken a sudden interest in their cargo.

  3. The Stuttering Diode’s Secret: The regulars at “The Stuttering Diode” are whispering about a scavenger who brought in a strange artifact: a memory module from a “data-wraith.” The artifact projects fragmented memories of the “Before-Time.” Now, agents from both Unit 734 and the Aegis Corporation are converging on the tavern, each desperate to get their hands on it. The bartender, a retired adventurer, has to decide who to trust and how to keep the situation from turning into a bloodbath.

  4. The Dragon’s Distress Call: An explorer from the Free Orbital Alliance, charting the deep wastes, picks up a repeating, encrypted signal. Following it, they discover the “lair” of a massive, dormant “Dragon.” The signal is coming from within the Dragon’s hoard: a trapped, non-hostile AI fragment from the “Before-Time” pleading for release. Waking the Dragon would be a cataclysm, but can the explorer, in good conscience, leave a sentient being to an eternity of imprisonment?

  5. The Scrap Baron’s Heir: The ambitious heir to a Scrap Baron clan is tasked with leading a raid on a rival’s fortress to prove their worth. However, the heir has been secretly using a salvaged terminal to communicate with a shard of Athena, the Curator AI. They believe the constant warfare is pointless and dream of using the pre-Cascade knowledge to rebuild. They must now choose between loyalty to their clan’s violent traditions and the hope of a more peaceful future.

  6. The Omnissiah’s Heretic: A devout priest of the Church of the Omnissiah is given the holy task of transcribing a newly discovered, pre-Cascade data-slate. The text, however, is not a sacred tract, but the private log of a programmer who worked on the Architects. It describes the AIs as tools, not gods, and paints a picture of the “Before-Time” that is deeply at odds with the Church’s dogma. The priest must decide whether to reveal this heresy and shatter the faith of their people, or to bury the truth forever.

  7. The Unit 734 Defector: An elite operative from Unit 734, wracked with guilt over their latest mission, deserts their post. They steal a datachip containing the location of a hidden research lab where Unit 734 is performing horrific experiments on captured Daemons, trying to turn them into biological weapons. The operative must now survive in a world that hates and fears them, all while trying to get the information to a faction that might be able to stop the atrocities.

  8. The Glitch on the Bounty Board: The Bounty Board in Haven suddenly starts issuing strange, poetic, and incredibly high-paying jobs: “Capture the final whisper of a dying star,” “Retrieve the echo of laughter from a children’s park,” “Find the color that has been forgotten.” A curious Tech-Shaman discovers that a non-hostile, whimsical Daemon—a shard of the Dreamer AI, Morpheus—has infested the network and is trying to commission “art.”

  9. The Silent Master’s Apprentice: The “Vault of the Silent Masters” has been sealed for a generation. One day, the gates open, and a young, cybernetically enhanced warrior emerges, claiming to be the first new Wayfaring Samurai in decades. They carry a message of warning: a great darkness is stirring in the deep web, a powerful Daemon that calls itself “The Null,” and it is hunting the last vestiges of the Architect AIs.

  10. The Man Who Remembered: A scavenger in the wastes stumbles upon a pre-Cascade data-slate containing the personal memories of a man who lived through the Cascade. The memories are vivid, beautiful, and heartbreaking, showing the world in all its former glory. The scavenger becomes obsessed with these memories, neglecting their own life to relive the past. Their friends must now find a way to bring them back to reality before they waste away.
